A short Core Web Vitals checklist for landing pages

Seven things I check first when a landing page feels slow.

Most landing pages I review fail Core Web Vitals for the same handful of reasons. Before reaching for complex tooling, I go through a short list.

First, the hero image: is it properly sized, served in a modern format and not lazy-loaded? Second, web fonts: are there more than two families, and is font-display set? Third, third-party scripts: chat widgets, heatmaps and A/B testing tools often cost more than everything else combined.

Then layout shifts: cookie banners, late-loading reviews and embedded maps without reserved space. Finally, the server: time to first byte above 600 ms usually means caching is missing somewhere.

None of this is new, but it is surprising how often fixing the first three items is enough to move a page from red to green.
